Plot:
The village of Hitosuji lies on a river which comes out of the mountains. In a farmer’s house, Takuji lies unconscious. Back from South America, he had an accident in the mountains. Several Southeast Asian women work in a bar. One of them, Tia, once had a son who drowned in a flood caused by deforestation in her own country.Kamimura is Takuji’s schoolmate. Coming to visit his friend, he starts to remember how they would play as boys, and visit a hut deep in the forest. As the seasons pass, the villagers come to know Tia, and she learns of Takuji. The summer brings a change in Takuji’s condition. His family and several villagers gather. His mother notices a dust-devil and announces that Takuji’s spirit has left his body. They try to call the spirit back, but to no avail. Takuji is dead.
After the performance of a Noh play, Tia walks alone into the forest. She spends the night in an abandoned hut. Meanwhile Kamimura, looking at the full moon, senses that Takuji has returned to the mountains…
At dawn Kamimura climbs up into the mountains, to the hut. There he finds Tia and they hear the sound of water in the well which was supposed to have dried up.

Synopsis

Summary
The wife of Nasim, an Afghan immigrant in Iran, is gravely ill. He needs money to pay for her care, but his day labor digging wells does not pay enough. The guy they’re up against has to be the creepiest villain I’ve ever seen in film, and his being cross-eyed is only part of the sensation. As he gets more and more screen time, Cops and Robbers builds into a strong and disturbing movie experience.

The Emperor’s Naked Army Marches On is a brilliant exploration of memory and war guilt, a subject often ignored in modern Japan. Writing, directing and photographing Man On The Brink, Cheung can’t possibly have been the first kid on the block to attempt this story that later cropped up to great effect in City On Fire. But watching Chiu’s descent shaped by the seedy world around him is quite engaging, much more so during the latter stages of the film when Cheung easily plants that sinking feeling in viewer’s stomachs. Meaning that the proceedings are heading towards a sad end statement as Cheung takes us on a continuation of the social commentary from his debut. His view on the Hong Kong citizens first may be seen as unified but as it turns out, it’s a unified, lawless group. Finely tuned is also his portrayal of triads that clearly have a tough shell that’s easily cracked in the face of blood and violence. Cheung shoots mostly gritty, documentary style but has an eye for whenever to use slow motion to exhilarating effect. Some misplaced comedy and a really sappy montage disrupts his social commentary for a bit however. Nevertheless, Man On The Brink rises well-above any familiar goals this particular story possesses, complemented by an immersing performance by Eddie Chan who would go on to make an impact in He Lives By Night and Law With Two Phases.
